For this post I am going to take a little trip into the past. Since many, if not all of my posts are focused on originality, I thought I might share a little bit on the topic of music. So I thought to myself, what is one of the most original pieces of music I have ever heard, and one of the first things that came to mind was John Cage's famous 4'33''. For those who are not familiar with this piece, it is simply put, just 4 minutes and 33 seconds of complete and utter silence. The reason I find this as one of the most original pieces I have ever heard is the fact that no one else has turned the simple element of silence into the cornerstone of the music itself. It is one thing to listen to it on your ipod, but it is a completely different thing to listen to it live because in such a case it is the audience who is the active participators in making the music since everything else must of course be completely silent. Without the audience, this piece would be utterly worthless because beneath the oddity of the piece, it is trying to convey the message that the audience does in fact play a hugely important role in the effectiveness of music. Personally, I would love to view this piece live. It would be such an interesting experience unlike any other concert I could probably see.
